MG Siegler is very influential in the tech industry. I love TechCrunch and I think his work as a VC is admirable. Siegler is also very opinionated and I find myself disagreeing with him quite often. Above is just one more blog post of his that I can’t get behind.
Yes, Google used their homepage to advertise a product they make / sell. It makes perfect business sense to advertise on the homepage because it has become a gateway to Google’s other web properties and millions upon millions of people will see the ad. What abut the fact that in 2005 Marissa Mayer said that Google wouldn’t do this kind of thing? Easy answer - at that point, Google didn’t sell ANY hardware products! (HTC Dream launched in 2008, The Nexus One in 2010) As Google’s needs changed, so did their homepage strategy - no brainer.
P.S. Steve Jobs stated that the original iPhone didn’t need apps.
